Kurt McVeigh is a firearms and ballistics expert whom Lockhart/Gardner hires as an expert witness on a case. He is impartial and only takes cases where the client is not guilty. Although he is a staunch conservative and Republican, he is drawn to the liberal Diane Lockhart, who refers to him as her Marlboro Man when the two strike up a romance.
